Description
Graphics for the #8tCantWait campaign, which describes eight police reforms to decrease police violence. This was launched by Campaign Zero, led by Deray McKesson and Samuel Sinyangwe, online in the days following George Floyd's murder and growing protests spurred by police brutality. The campaign was launched with the help of celebrities, activists, and public figures and shared widely on social media. The campaign focused on police reform, which many activists and prison abolitionists found a harmful half-step towards necessary, radical change. A group of abolitionists launched the #8toAbolition campaign as a direct response on June 7, which took a similar format as Campaign Zero's original graphics, and made instead the case for police abolition. This counter campaign appeared to be incredibly effective, as Campaign Zero put out a statement apologizing to those demanding more radical change, and promising to look into more bold visions for the future. Additionally, on June 9, 2020 one of Campaign Zero's original co-founders, activist Brittany Packnett, announced her departure from the group in response to the controversy.
