Description
Considered to be the first unerground newspaper of the 1960s in the south, The Rag was a key fixture in the Austin counterculture scene throughout the 1960s and into the late '70s. Founded by SDS activists at the University of Texas, Austin and in print for ten years, the newspaper was took on participatory democracy, community organizing, New Left politics, anti-Vietnam activism, and labor issues. Like many other underground publications at the time, The Rag was subject to continuted scrutiny by the Austin police and UT administrators and was ultimately the subject of a First Amendment rights case before the Supreme Court.
