Description
Recorded with Miguel Macias in his apartment in Brooklyn, NY; album art by Ethan Heitner. The first song, “John Henry (Did you go out on Strike?)” is based in part on a book by Scott Reynolds Nelson, who suggests that John Henry (of folk legend) may have been a young black worker from New Jersey who got arrested during a stevedores’ strike just after the Civil War and was subsequently conscripted as prison-labor on the railroad. The second song, “New Song for an Old Fight”, was prompted by a newspaper article in the Fort Collins Coloradoan about an ordinance, that has since passed, making it a crime to ask for money or employment in certain areas of Larimer County.
